  • Chirpy Chicks have a visit from Farmer John

    Published 19/05/17, by Admin

At the end of our exciting week, nursery have had 9 chicks hatch - 3 boys and 6 girls. On Thursday morning we noticed that one of the boy chicks had a limp and was holding one foot off the ground. (Other than that he seemed content and was busy eating and sleeping like all his brothers and sisters.) Mrs Beard decided to check with the farm - they said to wait and see how he got on overnight... This morning (Friday), there was no change so we had the farmer visit us in class. He said that the chick had a dislocated leg at the knee joint and it could be mended by taping it to his other leg (like a splint). After a few days it should slot back in as normal. John, the farmer, decided to take this chick back to the farm so he could look after it there, whilst it recovered. We all said 'goodbye' to this little boy chick - the children gave it a stroke... We talked about the responsibility of looking after pets and how you have to do the right thing for them (even when it is sad to say goodbye). We still have 8 chirpy chicks to look after. They are spending the weekend with Mrs Beard and then we will have one more week to look after them and watch them grow.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had one more chick hatch in nursery. This takes the total to 9 so far - three boys (yellow) and six girls (brown). We have spent lots of time watching and finding out how to care for our chicks. They are now fluffy and today we moved them to their new home, a brooder box. They eat chick crumbs and have fresh water, lots more room to play in and a light that gives them a warm environment. We are really enjoying looking after our chicks - we will look after them for one more week and see how much they grow.

  • Chick Update

    Published 17/05/17, by Admin

What a surprise the children had this morning when they came into class - 8 baby chicks had hatched during the night! We think 6 are girls (they are brown) and 2 are boys (yellow chicks).

The children have enjoyed watching the chicks this morning. Pipping (pecking out of their shells) was hard work - the baby chicks are sleepy and need lots of rest. We are leaving the chicks in their incubator today as they dry off and become fluffy. We are still watching the other 2 eggs that have not hatched yet - one has had pipping and cracks emerging, so hopefully there will be at least one more chick... Watch this space!

This half term, we are learning about 'new life' - this week focussing on plants and flowers. Nursery enjoyed an action packed morning on Tuesday 25th April - they walked to Monkswood to see the beautiful bluebells that are out at the moment. After a biscuit stop, the children enjoyed several activities: a woodland hunt, sketching the bluebells, building a den for teddy and in this picture the children are seeking out hidden numbered paper bluebells so that they can arrange them into a number line.

  • Spring Time!

    Published 27/03/17, by Admin

In the last couple of weeks, Nursery class have been finding out about Spring. We looked at what happens during the season of spring - plants and flowers starting to grow, warmer weather and signs of new life (our frog spawn has changed into tadpoles!)

Lana's Mummy came in last week and told us all about their Persian New Year which celebrates new life and spring - it was really interesting. We made Persian New Year cards, grew cress heads and tried smelling and guessing different spices. This week we have started to find out about the spring celebration, Easter. We are busy finding out about Easter customs, making our Easter cards and looking at patterns on eggs. We are looking forward (later on this week) to some Easter cooking and tasting too!

This half term Nursery have been focussing on stories and different fairytales. To date, they have had activities linked with 'The Gingerbread Man', 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes'. On World Book Day (Thursday 2nd March) they showed their 'Fantastic Finish' to their families. Thank you so much to everyone that came to this event - we had a record attendance with nearly every child supported! The families were treated to:

    • a puppet show performance of 'The Gingerbread Man'
    • some children talked about their favourite stories
    • parents saw videos of their children in a 'Little Red Riding Hood' PE lesson and in role play
    • a video of them playing 'What's the time Mr Wolf?' in the EYFS garden
    • tasting different pancakes toppings and charting the results
    • a workshop with sequencing, cake decorating, pancake tossing, sharing books and finally
    • Mrs Beard read the story 'Mr Wolf's pancakes'

Next week, Nursery's new fairytale story (requested by the children) is 'Cinderella'!

Nursery class  went on a walk to Shephalbury Park on Friday 10th February. This snowy walk aptly marked the end of their learning last half term on the 'Weather'! They looked at how their environment has changed with this wintery season (and even saw snowdrops starting to appear)... then they came back to school and enjoyed a treat - a gingerbread man and hot chocolate! Thank you to all the parents who helped us on this occasion.

The children have looked at rainy days, clothes for cold and frosty weather and we thouroughly enjoyed our snowy day. They have painted rainbows and looked at colour mixing. They have counted raindrops and snowmen up to 20 and made melting snowmen biscuits. Now we have started looking at animals and people that live in cold weather.

  • Amazing Autumn Term

    Published 30/11/16, by Admin

This half term, Nursery have been learning about Vehicles and Shapes.

The children started by looking at space rockets and counted backwards from 10 to blastoff. They enjoyed designing and making rockets out of the new large construction blocks in our EY garden. (Thank you RSA for these blocks - they are great!) Nursery have also sorted different vehicles into same sets and found out which went on land, rail, sea or air. We have now set up an outdoor role play garage area outside our classroom where the children enjoy washing and fixing bikes and other vehicles.

We have been learning about 2D shapes - their names and properties.  This week the children have cut out play dough shapes and matched them to their shape outline, they have sorted shapes into same sets, played pair games with shapes and have been on a shape hunt outside.

Nursery are also preparing for their Christmas show. We have found out about 'The First Christmas' story, and are now preparing songs, music and dances for our show. Please come and watch us next Thursday 8th December at 11.15am.

  • Healthy Eating

    Published 17/10/16, by Admin

Nursery have been talking about their favourite foods. We looked at which foods they liked and decided which foods grouped together. The children chopped up fruit and vegetables and tasted some. They read the story 'Oliver's Vegetables' and also printed with vegetables. We thought it was a good idea to eat a selection of different foods, but not too much of one type (otherwise you might get a tummy ache!)

Please join us for our 'Fantastic Finish' on Thursday 20th at 11.15am (in the school hall) if you would like to hear more about Nursery's learning this half term.
