  • Diwali Celebrations

    How do people celebrate Diwali?

     

    This week we have been learning about the festival of Diwali, it means 'The Festival of Lights'. We read a story about a little boy called Dipal who explained how his family got ready for and celebrated Diwali. We learnt about the Sita and Rama story which this festival is founded on.

    Throughout the week during child initiated learning we have been decorating Mendhi hands, making Rangoli patterns with rice and chalk and making flower garlands as part of the celebrations. On Thursday a lady came to teach us how to decorate Diya's and showed us how to do some Bollywood dancing. On Friday we tasted Chappati's and Mrs Kaur came to explain to us how she celebrates Diwali at home.

  • Science Fun!

    The Magic Porridge Pot Explosion!!!

     

    This week in Literacy we have been reading the story 'The Magic Porridge Pot'. Before sharing the story with the children on Monday we showed them a little experiment. The children made predictions about what might happen when we mixed together vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. The children then used their knowledge of what happened in the experiment to predict what might happen in the story.

  • Spooktacular Week!

    Funny Bones!

     

    This week in Reception we have been reading the book 'Funny Bones' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We have been naming the different bones in our bodies and thinking about why our skeleton is so important. We looked at the different speech bubbles in the story and created some of our own. Later in the week we will be thinking about what activities or objects may scare us and sorting them into different groups. During choosing time we have experienced a range of spooky activities such as writing with bones and blood(aka watery paint), played in a haunted castle, created some disgusting mud potions, and dug up animal bones in the sandpit.

  • Don't put your finger in the jelly Nelly!

    How does it feel?

    This week in Literacy the children are starting to learn the story 'Don't put your finger in the jelly Nelly!'  Mrs Prosser and Mrs Solomon really wanted to put their fingers in the jelly. The other adults in the room tried to stop them but they did it anyway, much to the shock and excitement of the children.

    As a class we read the story together and then created a story map to help us remember the story. In small groups this week we will be putting our fingers into the different food items from the story and finding words to describe how they feel.

  • Oak Class - First Week

    Our first week in Reception!

    We have had great fun getting to know the children this week. They have all settled in really well and we are looking forward to the year ahead. The children have started to learn about the routines we follow in Reception and have impressed us all with their positive attitudes. We have started to make new friends and have loved playing outside in the garden. The children were so amazing we even managed to fit in a Dance lesson in the hall. Bravo!

  • Spring Topic

    Magic Beans!

    Our topic in class this half term is Traditional Tales, we have been reading the story Jack and the Beanstalk. When we were tidying up last Friday some beans were found in the classroom the children thought they could be magic. Mrs Solomon and Mrs Prosser said that there was no such thing as magic beans and threw the beans across the classroom. Well would you believe by Monday morning  some a beanstalk had grown in both classrooms. Maybe they were real!?!

  • Explorers!

    Our first week at school!

    The children have now completed their first few weeks at school, they are becoming more familiar with the daily routines and are making new friends. The staff are very pleased at how the children have been settling into their new classes. This week we have been reading a story about starting school, we have started learning sounds in phonics and have been using Numicon everyday in maths. 

    Today, we went for a walk around the school grounds to see what we could find. We visited creature corner, had a look at the elephant sculpture at the bottom of the field and found a huge pirate ship on the large playground.

  • Dinosaur Extravaganza!

    WOW! WOW! WOW! What a morning! Today the children in Willow and Oak class met with Graham Woollard and Sue Woollard. As we entered the hall we heard the sounds of dinosaurs and saw palm trees and model dinosaurs laid out around the room.

    We learnt all about the different types of dinosaurs, how big they were and we even got a chance to go and look and touch the different models around the room, thinking about their different features.

    Graham told us about how the dinosaurs became extinct and how still to this day palaeontologists are discovering new facts.

    Towards the end of the morning we got to look closely as some dinosaur bones that are now fossils. Graham explained to us how they become fossilised. We even got to hold one!
