Learning Environments at Roebuck

Classroom environments can and do support and enrich the learning of all children at Roebuck.  As well as being vibrant and welcoming, the classroom environment is a learning resource, the second teacher, a way of engaging children and building the class community.  It can create a sense of ownership and be used to support and promote learning, as well as celebrate children’s work. With careful thought and planning, an effective immersive classroom environment can be used as an interactive resource to engage and support teaching, learning and assessment.

At Roebuck Academy we believe that a well-organised and stimulating environment has a direct impact on the quality of teaching and learning, and therefore supports raising standards.  It enables pupils to develop independence as learners, building on good Foundation Stage practice.

We work on the principle that we want our children to become 'immersed' in their learning. Therefore, we have adopted an immersive approach to our classroom environments. This is the reason that when children come into their classroom, they will be fully immersed in the subject or topic they are learning about. So, if children are learning about rainforests and the environment, their classroom will be developed to look like this area of the world. If we are learning about the Romans, then the classroom will reflect elements of Roman life.

This approach has been proven to help children feel more part of their learning and also works as a great ‘hook’ to excite children about their current topic. Here are some examples of immersive classrooms at Roebuck Academy!

We also enrich the learning environment with a variety of displays which either celebrate the children’s learning or act as a guide to their current work. The key displays we use as a learning tool in our classes are our ‘learning walls’. This includes a learning journey to help the children see the path of learning they are taking, key vocabulary to help them, model examples to act as a guide and other prompts to help them.
